'Tools of the Trade' 2017: The connection between Science and Art

A multidisciplinary Art Project designed and coordinated by Artists Leah Murphy and Susan Walsh.

In this project school children explored the connection that exists between the creative and inquisitive processes of both science and art due to the unique workplaces that they were exposed to. As well as an introduction to artists and craftspeople at work, they discovered the creative elements behind other professions.

The 2017 'Tools of the Trade' project involved students from St. Maries of the Isle Primary school and St. Finbarrs National school.

The children were introduced to four unique project partners:

Barbara Hubert Bookbindery, Cork Printmakers, The Tyndall National Institute and the School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences, UCC.

Beginning with a school based introductory workshop the children were introduced to the tools in everyday use at these places of work.

A series of creative workshops

The Children were encouraged to record all the site visits with small sketches and notes which were elaborated on at a later stage and continually referred to throughout the workshop series.

In this series of workshops the children experienced a wide range of materials and artistic techniques including observational drawing, printing and large scale collaborative paintings culminating in an exhibition of the children's work at Cork City Hall Atrium.
